Hillside New Tech High School teachers Fredrica Nash (pictured, left) and Angela Taylor have
been selected by the Kenan Fellows Program for Curriculum and
Leadership Development at North Carolina State University as Class of
2011 Kenan Fellows.
Beginning in June, they will engage in a two-year fellowship
supported by the National Science Foundation to develop innovative
curricula for use in North Carolina classrooms. Nash will work with
mentor Helen Gordon, CNM, Duke University. Her project is titled,
“Genetics, Genomics and Personalized Medicine: Advancing Health Care
through the Nursing Profession.” Taylor will work with mentor Dr. Len
Annetta from North Carolina State University. Her project is titled,
“Preparing Students for Careers in STEM: An Interactive Gaming Model.”
Nash and Taylor join fellow New Tech teacher and 2008 Teacher of the
Year Matt Sears, who was named a Kenan Fellow two years ago and
recently spent a semester in India as part of his studies.
As part of the two-year fellowship, Nash and Taylor will train to be
master teachers, work closely with their mentors in developing
projects, participate in research to develop inquiry-guided instruction
to be used in the classroom, develop and distribute lessons statewide,
talk with state leaders at events that promote the teaching profession,
train to be teacher leaders and present findings at state and national
conferences.
